Are Mobility Scooters Allowed On The Pavement?

The UK population now uses more than 450,000 mobility scooters, and as such you never fail to encounter another user when out and about. As the UK population ages, the usage of Mobility Scooters and Powerchairs will only increase, and as such, we will be sharing the pavement with able-bodied users for years to come. It’s important to establish the law surrounding Mobility Scooters and Powerchairs, as many people are still not aware.

Can I Use The Pavement On My Mobility Scooter?

In short, yes. Any Mobility Scooter can use the pavement where there is one available. This goes for Powerchairs and Powered Wheelchairs too. In fact, if you have a Mobility Scooter that is limited to 4mph (otherwise referred to as a Class 2) you should only use the pavement if one is available.

When using the pavement, all Mobility Scooters need to be turned down to 4mph maximum speed (consult your handbook for how to do this) and driven with other users in mind. Mobility Scooter and Powerchair users should give the right of way to pedestrians at all times and pay special attention to hazardous objects in their path.

Can I Use The Road On My Mobility Scooter?

Of course. If no pavement is available all Mobility Scooters can use the road, however, if there is one, Class 2 scooters are obliged to use it. Users of bigger Class 3 scooters can choose to use the road at any point and are governed by the same laws as all other traffic — with a few additions.

Please use caution at all times, whether using the road or the pavement, as accidents can often be catastrophic. It may be advisable to think about insuring your mobility scooter or taking out powerchair insurance to make sure you are covered for any eventuality. Using extra caution and care at all times will mean you can keep active and independent for years to come.
