First Training Weekend for England Powerchair Team
17th September 2015
All the boys come together for this weekend after being selected to attend by Colin Gordon (The manager). We all arrived on the Friday around 4pm where we then collected our kit and prepare for a training session for Friday evening.
This weekend was the first weekend that we had all training together in our new Strike Force wheelchairs. 8 out of the 9 players who were attending have all managed to get these chairs and so everyone was eager to train together.
Fridays training was put together to allow all the lads to get a feel in their new chairs by doing some simple drills to get the ball moving. We done many drills that included pass and move techniques which mimics the type of football that we will be playing on the pitch. Training lasted for two hours.
Following training we got changed and went for dinner and then had a team meeting.
Today was an early start where all the lads had to be down at breakfast for 8am. We had 4 hours of training ahead of us during the day so we had to make sure we have energy to see us through.
During training we worked on many drills and then we moved into matches. During the matches they would be analysed and then we would stop and speak about things during the match to see what we could have done better. The manager mixed the teams around so then he could see different combinations of players.
All of the boys had an amazing day and we cannot wait for the world cup next year, as a team we feel that we are progressing well and that we are so positive that if we all play to the standards we know we will progress far in the competition.
It was another bright and early start with the lads attending breakfast for 8am.
Once breakfast was finished all the lads went down to the sports hall and got our chairs ready to play. Once all the lads were ready we went through out normal warm up with our physio Charlie who gives us some hand stretches and neck stretches so then we don’t pull anything during training.
Training today was only for 2 hours and so the boss put us straight into a few quick drills to get our passing and moving on point and then once he was happy we then moved into game play.
Training seemed to fly by the whole weekend but I guess that’s what happens when you’re having fun and playing a sport that you love.
We finished training at 11.30 to which we all then had a debrief of which the manager was really please with everyone over the weekend and we all felt really positive going forward in our preparations.
We all then had some lunch and then headed home.
