The Living Wage Foundation Announces Significant Increase in UK Living Wage Rates

The Living Wage Foundation, a renowned charity, has recently announced a substantial 10% uplift in both the National Living Wage and London Living Wage pay rates. According to the latest update, the UK Living Wage has now been set at £12.00 per hour, while the London Living Wage has been increased to £13.15 per hour.

The Living Wage Foundation, an independent organization, meticulously calculates these wage rates to accurately reflect the true cost of living. The aim is to ensure that workers earn enough to cover their basic living costs, promoting a fair and sustainable economy. With approximately 14,000 employers already committed to the scheme, these new rates will be implemented by 1st May 2024.

It's important to note that the London Living Wage is specifically designed to address the higher living costs associated with residing in the capital city. Both the London Living Wage and the UK Living Wage are voluntary, meaning that employers are not legally obligated to pay these rates. However, the increasing number of employers embracing this initiative demonstrates a growing recognition of the significance of fair wages.

If you are an individual employer this may benefit your personal assistant as some Local Authorities are also signed up to the Living Wage Foundation scheme. Individual PA employers (on Direct Payments) in those areas will also be required to pay the new rates by the May 2024 deadline. In some cases, the council will be required to uplift the DP rate to facilitate this PA wage increase. Any PA employers on Direct Payments concerned about how this might affect them should contact their local Direct Payment support team for advice and guidance.

To determine whether your Local Authority is part of the scheme, you can directly contact the Living Wage Foundation through their website at www.livingwage.org.uk/contact-us. It's worth noting that the Living Wage Foundation continues to champion fair wages and work towards reducing income inequality in society.
